California Woman and Child File Lawsuit Against Motel 6 Entities and Individuals for Sex Trafficking

SAN DIEGO, CA – Jane Doe 1 and her minor daughter Jane Doe 2 have filed a lawsuit against multiple Motel 6’s and its associated entities, alleging that the defendants knowingly facilitated and profited from Jane Doe 1’s sex trafficking, which led to severe harm and permanent injuries. The lawsuit claims the defendants failed to take action against trafficking occurring at their Motel 6 locations and ignored red flags that could have prevented the abuse.

The plaintiffs are seeking justice and compensation for the physical, emotional, and psychological trauma caused to Jane Doe 1 during the period of her sex trafficking from 2018 to 2020. The lawsuit further seeks damages for the severe, permanent harm inflicted on her daughter, Jane Doe 2, who was born under emergency and life threatening circumstances with quadriplegic cerebral palsy as a result of Jane Doe 1’s trafficker forcing her to endure physical violence and abuse, and perform commercial sex acts throughout her entire pregnancy at the subject Motel 6s.

Jane Doe 1 was trafficked for sex under force and coercion at several Motel 6 locations across California, including properties in San Luis Obispo, Modesto, Redding, Turlock, and Manteca. Despite the widespread knowledge of sex trafficking in the hospitality industry and at these properties, the defendants allegedly ignored the obvious signs and failed to implement measures to prevent such abuse. Instead, defendants chose to continue to knowingly profit from the sex trafficking of Jane Doe 1, whom was noticeably pregnant during the later months. According to the lawsuit, it is alleged that at some Motel 6 locations not directly sued in this action, Motel 6 past managers estimate that up to 90% of their business and profits were directly tied to trafficking. These locations have similar problems.

"Our clients have suffered unimaginable trauma that has left them physically and emotionally scarred for life," said Meagan Verschueren, Counsel at Singleton Schreiber and the plaintiffs’ attorney. "It is concerning that their suffering went on for so long with multiple hotel locations turning a blind eye, not only to a woman being openly trafficked for sex, but also to the foreseeable harm to her unborn baby. Defendants’ choice to provide harbor and a venue for the traffickers, and to knowingly profit from the trafficking, allowed the abuse to continue, and they must be held fully accountable to both Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2."

The lawsuit highlights how Motel 6 and other hotel chains have long been known to harbor sex trafficking operations. Despite public claims of combating trafficking, the industry has often failed to take the necessary steps to prevent exploitation. Traffickers routinely use hotels as venues for their operations, knowing that these properties offer anonymity and little oversight or risk. The plaintiffs are calling for stronger accountability from the hospitality industry at large to prevent further abuse.
