She describes her experience with habeas corpus cases and advising clients in administrative immigration proceedings, especially those who believed following legal processes would guarantee their safety.
The article explores how women experience and manage fear during encounters with authority, focusing on immigration enforcement. Ong addresses concerns about unlawful detentions, lack of probable cause, and the emotional and psychological strain on families, particularly women who are often primary caregivers, during increased federal enforcement.
“There’s a common assumption that if you’re not doing anything illegal, you’re safe from law enforcement scrutiny—but unfortunately, that’s no longer true,” Ong said.
