The Center Square

Gerald Singleton, managing Partner of Singleton Schreiber, was recently featured in The Center Square providing insight on the Maui Fire case, following the recent settlement agreement.  The article discusses a tentative $4 billion settlement for the Maui fire, detailing the financial responsibilities of the parties involved, with the state of Hawaii expected to pay about 20% of the total. Key defendants, including Hawaiian Electric and Kamehameha Schools, will contribute significant amounts.  Hawaiian Electric is expected to pay $1.99 billion, and Kamehameha Schools $872.5 million. The settlement requires legislative approval and resolution of insurance claims, and the payouts are expected to begin in mid-2025.

Gerald states, "Due to the scope of this disaster, the state will have to provide a great deal of assistance to the Maui community regardless of whether or not this deal goes through -- we believe this deal maximizes the contributions from other defendants, we believe it is in the state’s interest to approve it. Ultimately, however, that is a decision that will have to be made by the legislature and the governor."
