Background

Fire details & investigation

The Gray fire ignited on August 18th, 2023. The Gray Fire near Medical Lake burned 10,085 acres and destroyed an estimated 259 structures, many of which were homes. At least 5,000 residents in Medical Lake and Silver Lake were evacuated, and one fatality has been reported. The Oregon Road Fire near Elk grew to nearly 11,000 acres, destroyed 126 homes, and killed one person. The air quality in much of Spokane County reached hazardous levels.

The DNR’s Wildland Fire Management Division has not released details of the investigation, but investigators believe both fires were human-caused. Questions have arisen as to whether power lines and other electrical equipment may have been involved. Triple-digit temperatures the week prior dried out vegetation, priming the area for rapid fire spread.

Singleton Schreiber will continue to monitor the situation as more details emerge and is here to guide Washington residents through the recovery process. Our fire attorneys will seek legal recourse where necessary and fight to obtain fair and full compensation for our clients to move forward with their lives.
