Officials are investigating whether fireworks were improperly stored at the Esparto facility.
A fireworks warehouse in the rural town of Esparto, California, exploded on the evening of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, killing at least one person and leaving seven others unaccounted for, according to Cal Fire. The incident occurred at a facility operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics, a company with decades of experience producing fireworks displays throughout California. The blast flattened the building, ignited a wildfire that burned 78 acres, and caused widespread evacuations and power outages.
Two people were hospitalized for injuries, and loved ones of missing workers, including several individuals who had just started their first day on the job, have gathered near the site awaiting updates. As of Thursday, firefighters and investigators were still working to access parts of the site safely, as flare-ups and explosive hazards remained.
The Dangers of Improper Explosives Storage
Initial reports indicate the explosion may have occurred in a part of the facility not approved for explosive storage under federal regulations. Law enforcement sources stated that while the site was licensed for fireworks-related operations, the section that exploded was outside the approved “magazine” area monitored by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). If confirmed, this could point to serious violations of federal and state safety regulations.
Workplaces that handle explosives, especially pyrotechnic materials, are required to follow strict storage, handling, and transportation rules to prevent catastrophic incidents. The potential for an industrial accident is significantly heightened when safety procedures are not properly followed, employees are not adequately trained, or hazardous materials are stored in unauthorized areas.
Gerald Singleton, managing partner at Singleton Schreiber, stressed the importance of legal oversight in cases like this:
“When facilities that handle dangerous materials operate outside of safety protocols, the risk to workers and the surrounding community becomes unacceptable. Families who have lost loved ones deserve a full investigation and accountability. At Singleton Schreiber, we are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.”
The explosion has also led to the cancellation of Fourth of July fireworks shows in several counties that relied on Devastating Pyrotechnics for their displays.
