U.S. SUPREME COURT DECIDES TO HEAR CLIMATE CASE AGAINST EXXON AND SUNCOR ENTITIES
The United States Supreme Court has agreed to review a Colorado Supreme Court decision allowing climate accountability claims brought by the City of Boulder and Boulder County to proceed against Exxon Mobil and Suncor entities. The lawsuit, originally filed in 2018, alleges the companies knowingly contributed to climate change while concealing associated risks and seeks to recover rising local costs tied to climate impacts. The companies argue that federal law preempts state-level claims and shields them from liability for in-state harms. The Supreme Court’s review will determine whether Colorado courts may continue to hear the case under state law.
