Overview
Roblox is a popular online game with over 80 million daily active users, many of whom are children. In fact, 42% of all Roblox players across the globe are under the age of 13.
While many parents view Roblox as a safe online activity for their kids due to its popularity among young people and the company's active marketing of games and experiences to children, unfortunately, the platform has turned out not to be as safe as people thought.
Young Roblox users were allegedly targeted by sexual predators within the game, and families now claim that Roblox failed to create appropriate barriers to prevent inappropriate communication with children.
Roblox has also been accused of allowing inappropriate content to circulate on its platform, making design choices that made the game addictive to keep children within its platform, and making children more vulnerable to predators.
In response to these Roblox failures, states across the country have begun investigations into the platform, with some attorneys general filing lawsuits. Parents and families have also filed civil claims, many of which have been consolidated in a multi-district litigation in the Northern District of California and some may be consolidated in California state court.
Singleton Schreiber, LLC is representing families in Roblox child sexual abuse claims, and our attorneys are prepared and ready to fight for the rights of innocent children who were groomed, victimized, and traumatized as a result of Roblox failing to take reasonable steps to protect its young audience.

How Roblox failed to keep its young user base safe
According to the lawsuits against Roblox, the online gaming platform failed in a number of ways to protect its young users. Some of the failures include:
- Not requiring age verification: Failing to verify users' ages made it possible for predators to pretend to be children, target young people online, and convince them to communicate. This communication opened up the door to predators grooming children to engage in inappropriate sexual behavior. Children also could change their birthdays to access a full range of content and features, without having to provide any verification.
- Enabling predators to use virtual currency to exploit children: Robux is the official virtual currency on the online Roblox platform. It costs real money to buy Robux, and Robux can be used to buy avatar accessories, premium features, and in-game upgrades. Unfortunately, predators can exploit children by offering Robux in exchange for sexually explicit pictures.
- Allowing adults to message minors. Previously, default settings in the platform enabled adults to easily message minors directly. This resulted in children receiving inappropriate and explicit messages. In some cases, parents report that their children were contacted relentlessly, with predators encouraging them to send sexually explicit material even during the children' s school day.
- Failing to moderate in-game chat: Roblox allows users to communicate during gameplay, which is a key part of the social experience of the app. However, these in-game chats can connect predators with children and lead to private messages and off-platform communication.
- Using an avatar system that creates a false sense of comfort: Predators were able to choose avatars that made them look childlike or that tapped into cultural trends, which put children on the platform at ease by tricking them into thinking they were talking to a peer.
- Allowing sexually-explicit games and content: Roblox allows users to publish games, experiences, and places. Unfortunately, Roblox has been accused of allowing users to create content that includes sexually-explicit themes. This includes games that appear innocent and child-friendly but contain acts of sexual violence or reference sex, nudity, and assault. Many of these games include avatars and designs specifically to appeal to children -- and they open up the door to grooming behavior.
- Not responding appropriately to accounts that violate community standards: Parents report that accounts remained active after being flagged multiple times for inappropriate behavior, often staying on the platform for long enough to victimize additional children.
- Marketing Roblox as a family-friendly and safe product: Many parents were put at ease by the fact that Roblox presented itself as child-safe and family-friendly, even though there were few or no safeguards for minors, and some of the games contained inappropriate material.
- Enabling off-platform connections. While Roblox doesn't officially endorse off-platform communication and prohibits sharing personal contact details, it was also easy for predators to get around these limitations and steer children to Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, and other third-party apps where they could communicate freely with even less oversight than Roblox provided.
Parents allege that these failures on the part of Roblox made it easier for predators to groom children and resulted in serious crimes, including kidnapping, sexual assault, and sextortion of minors.
In many cases, the harm to children went beyond exchanging pictures and sexually explicit material online and involved in-person contact with sexual predators.
Roblox lawsuits
Roblox lawsuits related to sexually predatory behavior started being filed in 2022. Discord was also named in the initial lawsuit, which was brought by a parent who claimed that Roblox had connected her underage daughter to multiple predators who sent her sexually explicit material.
Since that time:
- Numerous government officials have filed lawsuits against Roblox. This includes Los Angeles County officials, who stated in a court complaint, "Roblox portrays its platform as a safe and appropriate place for children to play. In reality, and as Roblox well knows, the design of its platform makes children easy prey for pedophiles.”
- Class actions have been repeatedly proposed: Class actions are large lawsuits with many plaintiffs. In 2024, a proposed class action was filed in California, with the complaint alleging that the Roblox platform was built on "predatory behavior toward minors or exploiting children." Another class action was filed in 2025, alleging that the company had put profits over children.
- A judicial panel ordered over 80 Roblox sexual assault lawsuits to be consolidated into an MDL. MDL stands for multi-district litigation. MDLs are not class actions -- each plaintiff retains their individual case in an MDL. However, related cases are moved before one judge who can resolve common issues affecting all the pending claims. A motion was filed to coordinate state court lawsuits in California.
- More plaintiffs continue to file lawsuits. Parents have also argued against Roblox's attempts to force claims into private arbitration and to keep cases out of the public eye.
Because each Roblox case is a very personal one, based on each child's experience, plaintiffs will need to carefully determine whether to pursue individual claims or become part of the MDL. Attorneys with Singleton Schreiber can provide help in determining how best to pursue justice in a way that maximizes your chances of fair compensation.
Grounds for claims against Roblox
Roblox lawsuits are grounded in product liability law. These laws ensure that companies can be held accountable for releasing a defective or dangerous product into the marketplace and/or for failing to protect their users from harm their products can cause.
Some of the legal grounds for claims against Roblox could include:
- Negligence: Roblox allegedly failed to act appropriately to prevent platform users from suffering harm. Some examples of this negligence include failure to moderate content, properly verify user ages, block chats and direct messages with minors, and remove flagged accounts promptly.
- Negligent Misrepresentation: Roblox promised parents and families that it was a safe haven for children and that it took steps to prevent predators from using the platform to exploit children. These representations were false because Roblox knew about the epidemic of predators on its platform and failed to take effective steps to address it.
- Consumer fraud: Parents were misled about the safety of the platform for minors
- Defective design: Roblox was designed improperly from the start to promote and facilitate predatory behavior.
- Strict liability: Companies can be held legally liable for losses when their products cause harm when used as intended -- even if the company was not specifically negligent. If Roblox is inherently harmful to children in the way it operates, strict liability laws could apply to hold the company accountable for the damage done.
- Intentional infliction of emotional distress: Plaintiffs have accused Roblox of allowing children on their platform to be intentionally exposed to harmful events that have resulted in lasting emotional trauma.
States that have taken action against Roblox have also pursued claims against the company for child exploitation and endangerment, with County Counsel Dawyn R. Harrison, who sued on behalf of the People of the State of California, stating:
"This is not about a minor lapse in safety. It is about a company that gives pedophiles powerful tools to prey on innocent and unsuspecting children. The trauma that results is horrific, from grooming to exploitation to actual assault. This needs to stop."
Who can file a Roblox lawsuit?
Many parents and families have already filed Roblox lawsuits after their children suffered harm while using the app. Singleton Schreiber is representing families who have faced this serious issue and who have been damaged by the app's failure to protect its vulnerable young users.
You may also be eligible to sue if your child experienced any of the following:
- Grooming by a sexual predator
- Sextortion
- Being coerced into sending inappropriate messages
- Being sent sexually explicit content
- Sexual abuse or sexual assault after meeting someone from the platform
You could pursue an individual claim, or your case could potentially become part of the group of cases in the multi-district litigation or California consolidation.
There are pros and cons to joining an MDL, including potentially becoming part of a global settlement and not having to go to court to prove your claim to get compensation -- but the downsides could include giving up some control over your case. Singleton Schreiber, LLC will help you decide what approach makes sense for you.
Damages in a Roblox lawsuit
Plaintiffs who have been harmed by Roblox failures have the right to full and fair compensation for their losses. Damages will be determined based on the specifics of each case, but plaintiffs could potentially be compensated for:
- Medical costs: Many children require mental health counseling and will continue to require therapy, medication, and other interventions as a result of the emotional (and sometimes physical) trauma they experienced due to grooming, exposure to sexually explicit materials, and virtual or in-person contact with predators.
- Emotional and psychological harm: Children can experience severe emotional damage as a result of exposure to predators or sexually explicit contact. Child sexploitation, which involves children being asked to provide sexual content, can also cause long-term mental and emotional damage.
- Pain and suffering: Families should be compensated for the pain and suffering they experienced. This can include emotional pain, as well as any pain resulting from physical harm children experienced when connections they made on Roblox resulted in real-life interactions with predators.
- Out-of-pocket losses: Some families experienced actual expenses associated with the fallout from their children's interactions on Roblox. This includes situations where parents had to relocate or switch schools to protect their child, or had to stop working or reduce working hours to care for their children. If Roblox is found to have committed consumer fraud, damages could also include compensation for buying in-game currency or subscribing to premium services under false pretenses.
- Punitive damages: If Roblox was found to be grossly negligent in causing harm to children, plaintiffs may be entitled to punitive damages. These don't just compensate the plaintiffs - they punish the defendants for their egregiously negligent behavior that put children in harm's way.
Singleton Schreiber, LLC will help you to understand the types of damages that you could be entitled to in your Roblox claim and will work to help you get the funds you deserve through a settlement or court proceedings.
