Airport Fire
At around 1 pm on Monday, September 9, 2024, a fire ignited in Orange County along the 32200 block of Trabuco Creek Road. The fire was sparked near the Trabuco Flyers Club, a radio-controlled aircraft club and flying space.
It’s widely reported that the cause of the fire was sparked by heavy equipment being used by Orange County Public Works employees. The employees were using the heavy equipment to move and place large boulders to serve as barriers restricting access to the vegetation just off Trabuco Creek Road.
TJ McGovern, Orange County Fire Authority Deputy Chief, confirmed that the fire was deemed “unintentional” and noted that the OC Public Works employees made several attempts to extinguish the fire after it was sparked while emergency services were being contacted.
As of 10 pm on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, Cal Fire provided an update that the fire had spread to cover more than 19,000 acres and is 0% contained. The fire continues to spread, showing the growth on the southeastern fronts. The fire crossed Ortega Highway and is actively affecting several structures in the area, although it is unknown how many have been affected and to what extent.
More than 629 firefighters are actively fighting the blaze, along with 7 helicopters, and 126 engines working to limit the fire's lateral spread. Cal Fire estimates more than 10,000 structures are threatened at this time.
So far two civilian injuries and five firefighter injuries have been reported.
