Elizabeth Aniskevich, Senior Counsel at Singleton Schreiber, was highlighted in a press release about a consumer protection lawsuit filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia against Unison.

Aniskevich is the lead attorney for the National Association of Consumer Advocates in a lawsuit that says Unison falsely advertises its product as a “no-debt” home equity option. The suit argues that Unison’s agreements are actually unlicensed mortgage loans backed by property liens. It aims to stop these practices in Washington, D.C., and cancel current agreements.

The complaint says Unison has violated the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Procedures Act. It also claims Unison is acting as an unlicensed mortgage lender and not following federal and local consumer protection laws for mortgage products.

“We’ve seen the devastation that follows when complex mortgage products are pushed into the market without meaningful oversight, and the 2008 financial crisis made clear just how devastating that can be for families and communities,” said Elizabeth Aniskevich, Senior Counsel at Singleton Schreiber and lead attorney for the lawsuit. “The market for these products is growing rapidly, and it is critical that the companies behind them are held to the same lending laws and consumer protection standards designed to prevent exactly this kind of harm.”
