Stephen J. Hill

Stephen Hill is a member of our Fire Litigation Division and leads our Utah office. Over the past decade, he has represented hundreds of property owners in California and Utah on claims against power companies for wildfire damage.

Mr. Hill has also tried a diversity of business and medical malpractice cases. He organized and was co-lead counsel for the legal team that brought a landmark antitrust case against Microsoft. He is an accomplished appellate attorney who has argued several cases in the Utah Supreme Court and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and he previously served as Special Counsel to the President of the NAACP.

As the co-founder of the Ragnar Relay Series, the world’s largest running relay series, and the former President and CEO of Linux Networx, a supercomputing company, Mr. Hill brings a depth of experience that allows him to provide thoughtful and creative business advice.

• 2012 Wood Hollow Fire Litigation (D. Utah). Co-lead counsel representing owners of approximately 200 properties located in Sanpete County, Utah, on claims against Rocky Mountain Power for damages caused by the Wood Hollow Fire. Properties ranged from mountain recreational properties to farms and ranches comprising several hundred acres. After liability discovery, all claims were resolved through mediation/arbitration.
• 2007 San Diego Wildfire Litigation (Superior Court, San Diego County). Co-lead counsel representing owners of approximately 185 properties located in San Diego County, on claims against San Diego Gas & Electric for damages resulting from the Witch Creek, Guejito, and Rice Canyon Fires. Properties damaged or destroyed included homes, nurseries, orchards, and undeveloped land. After liability discovery, claims were resolved through mediation.
• Caldera, Inc. vs. Microsoft Corp., 87 F.Supp.2d 1244 (D. Utah 1999). Co-lead counsel for Caldera, Inc., in its landmark antitrust case against Microsoft for monopolization of the PC operating system market. This followed the FTC’s 1994 consent decree with Microsoft and was first private antitrust action against Microsoft. Following discovery and rulings in favor of Caldera in Microsoft’s motions for summary judgment, the parties agreed to a $280 million settlement.
• Lantec, Inc. vs. Novell, Inc., 306 F.3d 1003 (10th Cir. 2002). Represented Novell in defense of tort and antitrust claims. The court granted summary judgment on the tort claims and a directed verdict on the antitrust claims. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed.
• Jackson v. Righter, 891 P.2d 1995 (Utah 1995). Represented Novell in defense of a claim for alienation of affections. Trial court granted motion for summary judgment. The Utah Supreme Court affirmed.
