Overview
Megan Stedtfeld is a member of Singleton Schreiber’s Public Entity Law practice group. A seasoned public servant, she has devoted the majority of her legal career to representing local governments and supporting communities through some of their most challenging moments.
Since joining Singleton Schreiber in January 2023, Megan has focused on client development, relationship building, and expanding the firm’s presence as a leader in affirmative litigation on behalf of public entities harmed by corporate misconduct. She is passionate about helping cities, counties, and special districts pursue justice and recover from wildfires, environmental disasters, and other large-scale harms caused by utilities and other corporate actors.
Before joining the firm, Megan served Calaveras County as Deputy County Counsel, Interim County Counsel, and ultimately as Appointed County Counsel. She also served as Assistant County Counsel for Yolo County. In these roles, she provided both litigation support and day-to-day legal guidance to the Board of Supervisors, department heads, commissions, and elected officials. Her work covered a wide range of issues including land use, emergency response, environmental health, and local governance.
As the lead in-house attorney for Calaveras County’s litigation against Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) following the 2015 Butte Fire, Megan played an instrumental role in securing a $25.4 million settlement to help the county rebuild. She worked closely with outside counsel, subject matter experts, and internal teams to document the county’s damages, coordinate recovery efforts, and pursue a strategic and successful legal response. That experience solidified her passion for helping public entities navigate complex litigation with compassion, strategy, and purpose.
Over the course of her career, Megan has helped guide Yolo and Calaveras counties through multiple declared emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic, housing crises, flood events, and debris flow risks. She has extensive experience advising on land use, code enforcement, public works, environmental compliance, risk management, and water quality issues. She is also highly knowledgeable in ethics and transparency laws such as the Brown Act, the Political Reform Act, and the Public Records Act.
Megan’s commitment to service began early in her legal career when she represented indigent parents in dependency court, cultivating a strong foundation in advocacy and a lasting passion for helping vulnerable communities.
She earned her B.A. in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and her J.D. from Lincoln Law School of Sacramento. While in law school, she worked full-time at a firm specializing in land use and real estate law. In 2014, she completed a professional concentration in Conflict Resolution from the University of California, Davis. She is admitted to practice in California and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.
Megan lives in Roseville, California, with her husband, their two energetic kids, and a much-loved rescue dog. Outside of work, she enjoys swimming, reading, quiet time for reflection, and playing golf. She was a proud member of the inaugural women’s golf team at Cal Poly in 2000. She also loves traveling and spending quality time with her friends and family, creating meaningful memories wherever life takes them. Megan has a passion for decorating and enjoys creating warm, beautiful spaces that reflect a sense of comfort and connection.
