Overview

Jessica Meeder is Senior Counsel at Singleton Schreiber and part of the firm’s Motions, Writs, and Appeals group, where she focuses on complex litigation strategy, briefing, and advocacy.

With two decades of complex litigation experience, Jessica has developed deep expertise across a broad range of practice areas, including mass torts, class actions, civil rights, environmental and toxic torts, sexual abuse, and catastrophic personal injury. Her work spans all stages of litigation, from complaint to appeal, in both state and federal courts nationwide.

Jessica’s approach to litigation is characterized by creativity, strategic precision, and a rigorous commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for her clients. She is particularly adept at developing compelling legal strategies and navigating complex law and motions practice. Jessica has secured numerous favorable judicial opinions at both trial and appellate court levels across the country and has recovered millions of dollars in compensation for her clients. Most importantly, her work has contributed to setting impactful legal standards in various landmark cases.

Throughout her career, Jessica has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advocating on behalf of underrepresented and underserved communities, working to correct deep-rooted injustices through effective legal action and social change.

Prior to joining Singleton Schreiber, Jessica managed and litigated complex, class action, and mass tort cases nationwide, including in high-profile matters involving defective medical devices and cancer-causing pharmaceuticals, environmental contamination from PFAS “forever chemicals,” and civil rights violations in schools and detention facilities.

Jessica began her legal career clerking for the Honorable Robert M. Bell, Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals (now Supreme Court). At the University of Maryland School of Law, she served as Staff and Associate Editor of the University of Maryland Law Journal of Race, Religion, Gender, and Class and earned a Certificate of Concentration in Environmental Law. Jessica obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, Seattle, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.

Jessica is admitted to practice in Maryland, Colorado, and the District of Columbia as well as multiple federal courts. She is a member of the American Association for Justice, in which she’s held numerous leadership positions, and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. She was recognized by The National Trial Lawyers Association as a Top 40 Under 40 and Top 100 Civil Plaintiff’s Lawyer—Washington DC.”

Jessica is an avid mountain biker and skier and enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. After decades of living in Maryland, she and her family now reside in Colorado.

Case Results

T.L. v. Orange Unified School District, Case No. 8:23-cv-01078 (C.D. Cal.). 

  • Represented plaintiffs in a putative class action alleging that Orange Unified School District’s student disciplinary procedures, particularly the Student Success Panel (SSP), violated due process, violated students’ civil rights, and discriminated against Black and brown students. 
  • Result: Jessica successfully resolved the case, securing significant system-wide reform.  

In re: Hair Relaxer Marketing Sales Prac. and Prod. Liab. Litig., Case No. 1:23-cv-0818, 2024 WL 4333246 and 2024 WL 4333709 (N.D. Ill. September 27, 2024).  

  • Member of the class action and science committee teams in a multi-district personal injury, medical monitoring class, and consumer class litigation regarding hair relaxer products that cause cancer, in which the firm’s managing partner holds a steering committee position. 
  • Jessica was primarily responsible for developing the consolidated class action complaint, particularly the medical monitoring claims, and defending that pleading through preliminary motions practice. 
  • Result: As a result of her advocacy, the court denied defendants’ motions to dismiss and strike the consumer and medical monitoring class action complaint. 

Brown v. St. Gobain Performance Plastics Corp., Case No. 16-cv-242 (D.N.H.)  

  • Represented multiple plaintiffs in a property damage and medical monitoring class action regarding groundwater contaminated with PFAS “forever chemicals” and ingested via household water supply.
  • Jessica played a lead role in the complex, technical Daubert and appellate briefing regarding medical monitoring experts, damages experts, and New Hampshire medical monitoring law.   
  • Result: Jessica’s efforts helped persuade the court to deny the defendant’s motions to exclude plaintiffs’ experts.  

In re: Allergan Biocell Textured Breast Implant Prod. Liab. Litig., Case No. 2:19-md-02921 (D.N.J.). 

  • Led multiple MDL committees and helped direct a multi-district personal injury, consumer class, and medical monitoring class litigation regarding breast implants that cause cancer, in which the firm’s managing partner held a co-lead role. 
  • Jessica was responsible for the successful medical monitoring pleadings and preliminary motions briefing and argument. She effectuated the committee structure, developed the class case and allegations, and bridged the class and mass sides of the litigation.   
  • Jessica also played a key role in briefing an early motion for protective order that sought to prohibit Allergan from continuing its unlawful solicitation of legal releases directly from class members and without class counsel involvement. 
  • Result: The court granted that motion, upholding the integrity of the class device and protecting the class members’ claims. 

In re: Zantac (Ranitidine) Prod. Liab. Litig., Case No. 20-MD-2924, 2021 WL 4593943 (S.D. Fla. 2021 October 6, 2021) 

  • Member of the class action and medical monitoring teams in a multi-district personal injury, medical monitoring class, consumer class, and third-party payor class litigation regarding a pharmaceutical that causes cancer, in which the firm’s managing partner held a steering committee position.   
  • Jessica played a lead role in drafting the medical monitoring class action complaints and defending them through multiple rounds of preliminary motions briefing and oral argument.   
  • Result: Her advocacy led to the court denying defendants’ motion to dismiss the amended medical monitoring class action complaint.  

M.S., et al. v. Hamilton County Department of Education, et al., 756 Fed. Appx. 510 (6th Cir. 2018); Case No. 1:16-cv-00501 (E.D. Tenn.). 

  • Lead counsel for plaintiffs in a putative class action brought under the Fourteenth Amendment and 42 U.S.C. § 1983 on behalf of dozens of school children injured or killed as a result of a school bus crash. 
  • In light of a significant state damages cap, this Section 1983 claim was the only way for Jessica H. Meeder | 3 these children and their families to obtain reasonable compensation. 
  • Result: The Sixth Circuit reversed the district court’s dismissal, solidifying a path to resolution and positively clarifying the legal standard for other, similar due process claims in the Circuit

Diallo, et al. v. AAAfordable Transportation LLC, et al., Case No. 24-C-17-005079 (Cir. Ct. Balt. City, Md.).  

  • Lead counsel for plaintiffs in a consolidated, putative class action case brought on behalf of 17 individuals who were injured or killed in a tragic bus crash. 
  • The case creatively targeted liability on Concentra, the company that wrongly certified the bus driver as medically fit, thus navigating around the employer defendant’s insolvency. 
  • Result: the case was successfully resolved for more than 80% of the plaintiffs’ highest damages values. 

Boler, et al. v. Earley, et al., 865 F.3d 391 (6th Cir. 2017).  

  • Represented plaintiffs in the second-class action case filed on behalf of Flint, Michigan residents for their toxic and valueless water. 
  • The legal claims uniquely focused on 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and the Contracts Clause. 
  • Result: The Sixth Circuit reversed the district court’s dismissal, concluding that plaintiffs’ 42 U.S.C. § 1983 claims were not preempted by the Safe Drinking Water Act and paving the way for future compensation. 

Scales, et al. v. Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, et al., Case No. CAL17-18720 (Cir. Ct. Prince George’s Cty., Md.). 

  • Lead counsel for multiple plaintiffs in a putative class action case brought against Kaiser Permanente and its employee physician regarding the physician’s long-term sexual assault of his female patients under the guise of medical treatment. 
  • The case raised unique issues regarding the intersection of statutory medical malpractice procedures and class action rules in the context of physician sexual assault. 
  • Result: Following Jessica’s extensive, nuanced briefing and argument, she successfully resolved the case. 

In re Behr Dayton Thermal Products, LLC, Dkt. 274, Case No. 3:08-cv-326 (S.D. Ohio March 20, 2017), aff’d, 896 F.3d 405 (6th Cir. 2018), cert. denied, 139 S.Ct. 1319 (2019).  

  • Represented plaintiffs in a groundwater contamination class action involving two separate groundwater plumes and multiple significant corporate defendants. 
  • Result: After voluminous, technical fact and expert discovery and class certification briefing, and in a case of first impression in the Circuit, the district court granted issues class certification under Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(c)(4) without requiring class-wide predominance. 
  • Result: The Sixth Circuit upheld the decision on appeal.  

Sullivan, et al. v. St. Joseph Medical Center, Inc., et al., Case No. 03-C-10-012624 (Cir. Ct. Balt. City, Md.); True, et al. v. Catholic Health Initiatives, et al., Case No. 13-cv-00065 (D. Md. 2013).  

  • Jessica was part of a team that represented hundreds of patients who were wrongfully implanted with unnecessary cardiac stents by their physician, litigating the matter as both a mass tort and putative class action (and involving a separate qui tam component). 
  • Result: Following trial in Sullivan and discovery in True, the cases were successfully resolved
