Press Release

Singleton Schreiber is proud to welcome Letitia Johnson as the managing partner of our Southeastern Region and a leader in our Civil Rights and Environmental Litigation practice groups.  An accomplished attorney with deep ties and a history of service to the communities of her home state of Mississippi, Ms. Johnson will lead the firm’s fight against environmental racism and other historic inequities in the Deep South.

She will also take a lead role in the firm’s Hair Relaxer litigation against L’Oreal, Revlon and similar defendants. Despite knowing that the endocrine disputing chemicals in their products significantly increased their customers’ risk of developing cancer and uterine fibroids, the defendants in these suits knowingly marketed them to women of color for decades.

Ms. Johnson’s career has been centered in Jackson, Mississippi, where she has worked in numerous capacities, including serving as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Her dedication to investing in the communities of Mississippi is reflected in Ms. Johnson’s service as a past president and member of the Jackson Public School Board of Trustees. She is an active member and former officer of the Jackson Chapter of The Links, Inc., a volunteer service organization committed to enriching and protecting the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other people of African ancestry.

With Singleton Schreiber, Ms. Johnson will advocate for disadvantaged communities throughout the Southeastern United States. “Letitia understands how dire the situation is for minority communities facing long-term health damage caused by corporations destroying the environment,” said Gerald Singleton, Managing Partner of Singleton Schreiber. “Many corporations deliberately locate polluting industries in communities of color, who then bear the brunt of the toxins discharged into the air they drink and the water they breathe. Letitia is going to focus on obtaining justice for those unduly impacted by these completely preventable injustices.”

Ms. Johnson’s efforts to fight environmental racism will include seeking damages and remediation from corporations who place such harmful facilities as chemical plants, factory farms, public landfills, and hazardous waste disposal sites in minority communities.

“I’m proud to join a firm that is focused on helping those with no one else to turn to,” Ms. Johnson said. “Right now, the financial impact on communities of color from environmental disasters is appalling. Corporations are turning a blind eye to the higher risks of cancer and disease these folks are facing, and together we’re determined to put a stop to that.”
