Brian Colón, Managing Partner of Singleton Schreiber’s New Mexico offices, was featured in Source NM article titled "Democrats question former DOJ officials about Trump administration dealings" which discusses coverage of a lawsuit filed by New Mexico Highlands University against FEMA. The university, represented by Singleton Schreiber, is challenging FEMA’s requirement that it first exhaust the Public Assistance program before accessing funds allocated through the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act.
The suit argues that the Public Assistance process is not only slow and bureaucratic, but also inadequate for fully addressing the university’s damages, which include structural damage, forced closures, and emergency operations costs.
“The Public Assistance program is a lengthy discretionary reimbursement program, not a compensation program, that is difficult to navigate, can take years to complete, and will not cover all of Plaintiff’s damages,” writes Colón in the filing.
Colón’s work on this case continues Singleton Schreiber’s commitment to holding federal agencies accountable and ensuring that public entities receive the compensation they are legally entitled to—without undue delay.
