Judge Leans Against Dropping Edison Parent From Eaton Fire Cases

Paul L. Starita, Partner at Singleton Schreiber, was featured by the Daily Journal in an article titled "Judge Leans Against Dropping Edison Parent From Eaton Fire Cases," published on September 23, 2026.

Starita represents plaintiffs in the Eaton Fire litigation alongside Amanda L. Riddle of Corey Luzaich de Ghetaldi & Riddle LLP. At the hearing on Edison International's motion for summary judgment, Starita and Riddle submitted on the court's tentative ruling without argument.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Laura A. Seigle tentatively rejected Edison International's bid to exit the litigation. The parent company argued it is a holding company legally separate from Southern California Edison and does not operate or maintain the utility's electrical infrastructure. Plaintiffs pointed to joint corporate committees, wildfire mitigation planning, and executives who held positions with both companies, arguing these relationships raise factual questions about Edison International's direct involvement in wildfire-risk management that should be decided at trial. The hearing was the first of a series of dispositive motions ahead of the first bellwether trial, scheduled for January 25, 2027.
