Shani Butler-Anderson, Associate Attorney at Singleton Schreiber, was featured by the Land & Climate Review in their article, "Drax’s U.S. Environmental Violations Now Total Over 18,000 Incidents" which examined widespread Clean Air and Clean Water Act violations linked to the company’s U.S. operations.
The article detailed findings showing that Drax violated environmental regulations more than 6,700 times at its Louisiana wood pellet mills between 2019 and 2024, bringing the total number of identified U.S. violations to more than 18,000. Louisiana state regulators have indicated the company could face fines exceeding $200 million for violations at its Morehouse BioEnergy facility, where excess emissions of hazardous pollutants were recorded multiple times per day on average.
The reporting also noted that attorneys are preparing a mass action lawsuit against Drax over “significant, repeated and ongoing violations of the Clean Air Act” at the company’s pellet mill in Gloster, Mississippi. The case is being brought on behalf of local residents impacted by long-term pollution and follows a series of enforcement actions, fines, and permit disputes involving the company across multiple states.
Addressing the impact on the Gloster community, Ms. Butler-Anderson said:
“Drax’s actions are shocking in the level of impact they’re having on this community. The case is being brought on behalf of Gloster residents to hold Drax accountable for their reckless environmental practices and make certain that the people who’ve endured this for way too long — this level of pollution, this encumbrance on their lifestyles — are able to be compensated.”
