Marisa Ong, Senior Counsel at Singleton Schreiber, was featured in coverage of a civil rights lawsuit accusing former Deming police officer Jesus Lopez Jr. of sexually exploiting a 16-year-old girl and alleging that local and state agencies failed to address prior misconduct. The lawsuit claims Lopez used his position to lure the teen into a violent sexual relationship that lasted nearly a year, beginning in January 2024, and included allegations of forced alcohol use and recorded abuse. It also asserts that the City of Deming and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety ignored warning signs and prior incidents involving Lopez at another department. The suit seeks damages for the victim and calls for stronger oversight and reforms to prevent similar cases. Lopez was arrested in December 2024 and later pleaded guilty in July 2025. Watch the video in the article for more details on the case and the legal claims.
