A lawsuit has been filed against the parent companies of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, alleging negligence that led to a catastrophic subsurface oxidation reaction in 2022. The reaction released hazardous gases and odors into surrounding communities, causing physical, emotional, and economic harm to over 100 plaintiffs.
The lawsuit accuses the defendants of failing to address known risks since 2019 and mismanaging their response to the event. Plaintiffs seek compensatory and punitive damages for the impacts on their health, property, and quality of life. Johnson stated that, "this catastrophic event, caused by defendants’ negligence, was preventable and caused local residents to experience significant harms.”
